It's been a very good year for Will Smith. Not only is his Hancock a runaway box-office hit, but he also banked an impressive $80 million - making him Hollywood's top money earner last year, according to a new ranking from Forbes.
Cameron Diaz is no victim of the current economic pinch, either. Making $50 million last year, the Shrek and What Happens in Vegas star was Tinsel Town's top-earning female, reports the business publication. Among others in the financial stratosphere: No. 2-ranked Johnny Depp, with a $72 million paycheck, and, tied for third place, Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers, with $55 million each - even though Myers's recent The Love Guru tanked. Leonardo DiCaprio, with $55 million, rounded out the top five.
And while Atonement leading lady Keira Knightley earned $32 million, and Jennifer Aniston pulled in $27 million, Forbes notes that, once the gold dust settles, men make twice as much as women in Hollywood.
In terms of media personalities, Oprah Winfrey still owns the bank. Her earnings last year were a staggering $275 million. As for other TV stars, Charlie Sheen was the top-earning male ($20 million), while Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl - who's also been stepping into big-screen roles - deposited $13 million, making her the top-ranking female.
...Oh my! I can't even imagine the damage, and all the good I could do with $50 million dollars. Are they really worth the money?
Sadness.. the world is less one Golden Girl. From People.com...By Stephen M. Silverman
Golden Girls cast, clockwise from top: Bea Arthur, Betty White, Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan Photo by: Everett
Estelle Getty, who won an Emmy and a Golden Globe as the tart-tongued Sophia Petrillo - mother of Beatrice Arthur's character - on TV's The Golden Girls, has died. She was 84.
Getty's longtime manager, Alan Siegel, told PEOPLE on Tuesday: "As of 5:35 this morning, surrounded by her family in her Hollywood Hills home, Estelle Getty passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. Her family and close friends thank everyone for being so loving and supportive of Estelle in her last few years."
For many years, Getty had suffered with Lewy's Body Dementia, which has been described as a type of Alzheimer's disease.
Also starring with Betty White and Rue McClanahan on the NBC sitcom, Getty's Sophia resulted in her receiving seven Emmy nominations, and a win in 1988. Equally winning were her well-delivered insults on the show. A typical Petrillo put-down: "I think there's a connection between your brain and wallpaper paste."
Daughter of Immigrants
Specializing in playing "old" (Getty, only a year older than Arthur, was in her early 60s when she was cast as octogenarian Sophia), the future TV star was born Estelle Scher, the daughter of Polish immigrants, on New York's Lower East Side.
From age 5 "I wanted to be [movie queen] Claudette Colbert." Getty told PEOPLE in 1986.
Desperate for an acting career, Estelle took lessons - then, in 1946, she took a husband: retail-glass businessman Arthur Gettleman, whose name she would later adapt as a stage professional. But first, she raised the Gettleman's two sons, Carl and Barry.
Eventually there were off-off Broadway roles, then Harvey Fierstein cast her as his overbearing mother in Torch Song Trilogy, which opened on Broadway in 1982. The spotlight from that show resulted in her landing the role of Sophia.
Arthur Gettleman died in 2004. Her sons survive her.
"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son, Carl Gettleman told the Associated Press Tuesday. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."
Christian Bale's attorneys released a statement Tuesday denying assault allegations that led to the actor's arrest in London:
"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," the star's lawyers said in the statement. "Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."
Remember when Kid Rock got in trouble for that fight at the Waffle house? Well, here's the video... how do you think Kid did? From TMZ.com...
We've obtained the surveillance video of Kid Rock's infamous brawl at a Georgia Waffle House -- and it's one full order of ass whuppin'! Rock jumps up mid-meal and starts barking at the guy in the green shirt. Kid's bodyguard holds him back -- but not for long -- as Rock hops over a booth and starts serving up a slew of knuckle sandwiches.
No audio on tape, but you don't need it. Kid Rocks!
...Fighting is so not cool. And it seems like he is the one who took it to the "physical" level. But then again, we don't know what that guy said either. It's all said and done now... but we'll always have the video.
It's the Jolie Pitts! One big happy family! From Popsugar.com... It's right back to business at the estate for the Jolie-Pitt family! The whole family - minus the new twins Knox and Vivienne - played in the yard on Sunday. Maddox with his bleached hair and Pax played with that awesome giant ball while Zahara ran around while Shiloh, well, Shiloh looked a little upset. Awwww. There were even some other kids around, as well as Brad's mom who chatted with Angelina.
...You know that house, as large as it is...must be a MAD HOUSE with all those kids. But something tells me, the Jolie-Pitts are handling it just fine. Can't wait to see those twins!
